Community Service- MASC/MAHS Summer Leadership Camp 2018

Screen Shot 2018-11-03 at 4.34.23 PMFor the past 4 summers, I have volunteered as a junior counselor at MASC/MAHS Summer Leadership Camp. MASC/MAHS is an organization that promotes student leadership skills in high school students. Every year they put on a week-long summer camp where high schoolers from all across the state of Michigan come together to network, grow, and learn about how they can be better leaders in their schools and communities.

This year, I was placed at level 2 at camp. Level 2 is designed for second-year campers to critically think about themselves as leaders. As a level 2 JC, I helped each of my 22 campers develop a goal for themselves to work on during the upcoming year. These goals are called BE goals (BE stands for better every day). Throughout their week at level 2, students learn that leaders never stop growing and becoming the best version of themselves that they can possibly be.

My staff partner for the week, Roselie, and I really challenged our campers to create a goal that has meaning for them and will be a challenge to accomplish. We reminded them that leaders aren’t made overnight and true leadership and self-development is an ever-going process.

I was so grateful to be able to volunteer for my 4th year at MASC/MAHS student leadership camp. This camp holds a special place in my heart and I hope to volunteer at it next summer as a senior counselor.

PSC 105

pscThis past summer, I had the opportunity to take an introductory course in United States Government. As part of my Leader Advancement Scholarship Protocol, we have the choice to take PSC 105 or a sociology course. Since I had already taken a few sociology classes in high school, I decided to challenge myself by taking the government and politics course.

However, unlike many of my classmates, I enrolled in the course over the summer rather than during the school year. Since the Teacher Education Program is very long and intensive, I didn’t have room for it during this spring when my classmates would have normally taken it. Instead, I took it in an 8-week online format at the community college at home.

Throughout the 8 week course, we discussed every aspect of government and politics. From investigating every branch to learning about political parties, and governments around the world, we touched on ideas and concepts I had not known of prior to this course. Additionally, I really appreciated how my instructor didn’t hide the flaws and issues that are taking place in our government but rather used them as discussion points for our course.

After taking this course, I feel more well-rounded as both a United States Citizen and a student studying leadership in general. It is so important to educate ourselves on actions taking place within our government and to be an active citizen. Also, this course taught me a great deal about the many leadership positions held within the government and how each of these leaders make decisions that greatly impact our everyday lives.

Overall, I really enjoyed this course and greatly enjoyed learning more about our nation’s government and politics.

RSO Involvement-SMEA

smeaAs a freshman, I knew that I wanted to get involved with a student organization devoted to future educators. In my EDU 107 (Introduction to Teaching) course, my professor gave us a list of student organizations that she recommended teacher education students join. On that list was SMEA or Student Michigan Education Association.

SMEA is a student organization devoted to helping pre-service teachers develop into the best educators they can possibly be. To do that, SMEA brings in professionals from the field to talk with us, puts on conferences for future educators, and creates community service opportunities for us to volunteer in the school district.

I’ve really loved being part of SMEA. Not only has it allowed me to make more connections with students and faculty in the Education Department at CMU, but it has taught me about the true in’s and out’s of becoming a teacher.
