Service Learning: MASC/MAHS Leadership Camp 2018

campThis past summer I had the opportunity to volunteer at MASC/MAHS Summer Leadership Camp. MASC/MAHS Summer Leadership Camp is a week-long leadership camp geared towards high school students who have the desire to develop their leadership skills and network with other student leaders across the state of Michigan. Students come to camp from all different backgrounds to learn about ways to better themselves, their community, and the world around them.

This was my 4th year at the camp in total, one as a camper and three on staff.  In previous years I was a counselor for level 1 campers, students who were experiencing camp for the first time. This year I had the opportunity to work with students who were camp2attending camp for the 3rd year. Throughout the week, my staff partner, Zack, and I led these students through various activities, simulations, and discussions all to help students understand their strengths and weaknesses and how they can use their attributes to better themselves, their communities, and ultimately our world.

Every year I find myself taking away something different from camp. This year I was reminded of the importance of being intentional in my relationships with others and also finding ways to improve on my weaknesses. Since level 3 requires students and counselors to fill out a Leadership Practice Inventory it allowed me to see my strengths and my weaknesses and how my leadership style would be best put into action.

I am very grateful for another opportunity to volunteer at MASC/MAHS Summer Leadership Camp and I am excited to return next year.

KME Public Relations Chair

Screen Shot 2018-03-28 at 7.21.26 PMAfter joining Kappa Mu Epsilon, a mathematics honor society this year at CMU, I had the opportunity to become the club’s public relations chair. During my first semester in KME I found so much value in attending meetings and events as a general member I decided to apply to be the new Public Relations Chair.

When I first joined KME, we had no social media presence. As the new Public Relations Chair, not only have I created a facebook page for us but I also have been in charge of creating posters for our upcoming meetings.

Holding an executive board position in a student KME has pushed me out of my comfort zone and made me grow both personally and professionally. Becoming KME’s PR chair allowed me to further network with other KME members, plan meeting agendas, create community service opportunities, advertise our club’s information, and give back to CMU students.

Student Hearing Officer Committee

cmusccAs one of the requirements of the Leader Advancement Scholarship, we are required to serve on a University committee during our junior or senior year. To fulfill this requirement, I served the Student Hearing Officer Committee under the Office of Student Conduct during my junior year.

This committee is made up of a group of 20-30 CMU students that undergo a 3-hour training about the process of student hearings and CMU’s student code of conduct. During this training, we learned about the discipline hearing process at the university level and went over many scenarios and discussed whether or not the student in that scenario was in violation of CMU’s student code of conduct.

Our role as students on the committee was not only to undergo this training but it was to also sit in on student hearings as a student officer to make sure that students were getting fair treatment during the student hearing process.

Serving on this committee has allowed me to deepen my understanding of university rules and procedure while also working together with fellow CMU students to ensure every student was getting fair treatment during their hearing.

You’ve got a friend in me: Mentoring a LAS Freshman

14212028_1414352508578173_1436817524207432811_nOne of the most unique parts of the Leader Advancement Scholarship is coming into your freshman year of college having someone you know you can reach out to for a helping hand, questions, and support. Each LAS freshman is given a mentor, a sophomore LAS student, to help guide them through their freshman year of college.

At the end of my freshman year, I was so lucky to have received Madison Mariles as my LAS mentee. I met Madison through MASC/MAHS Leadership camp the summer going into my freshman year. I never really knew her personally, but I was always inspired by her natural leadership capabilities and her outgoing, bubbly personality. I hoped that she would apply for LAS because I thought the program would be a great fit for her, especially as someone who lived and breathed leadership as a lifestyle.

I was so happy to not only find out that she received the scholarship last January, but later on in April, I had the opportunity to be her LAS mentor.

14316833_1458384477511263_5181495623173524781_nEven though I am supposed to be her mentor and help guide her through her freshman year, I am grateful that she has been just as much of a mentor to me. She has inspired me to challenge myself to strive to be more and do more in my community, as well as form intentional relationships with those around me. I am a better person and leader because of her.

It has been a blessing watching her grow and blossom in her first year of college here at CMU and I’m so proud of her for following her passions. I couldn’t ask for a better mentee and I am so excited to see where her time at CMU takes her.

519BFCtEjqL._SX397_BO1,204,203,200_.jpgAs part of the protocol for the Leader Advancement Scholarship, my classmates and I had the opportunity to take Philosophy 118L: Moral Problems during the Fall 2016 semester.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, my classmates and I met bright and early at 8 am to discuss exactly that, moral problems within society. However, we didn’t debate these topics, but rather we discussed these issues from a moral standpoint, talking about what justified whether something was morally right or wrong. We discussed everything from abortion to capital punishment to wealth distribution and everything in between.

I really enjoyed the course as it opened my eyes to many viewpoints on controversial subjects. I often would go into the class thinking I had a certain view about a topic, but by the time class was over, my viewpoint had completely changed because I never thought about an issue in that way. The course made me realize that there is no “right” or “wrong” viewpoint on any given subject. Rather, it is the moral views that you hold as an individual that shape your beliefs.

As I student studying leadership, I found this course to be very applicable in almost every aspect of life. Throughout my entire life, I will meet people with different views, values, and beliefs. Though someone may hold different opinions than I do, it is important to be able to gain an understanding of the other views that people hold and why they hold them as it can help you understand and get to know that person on a deeper level.

Overall, I found this course to be very valuable as a student leader, in my future career field, and as a human being.

COM 267L Reflection

41ZYgbWZIbL._SX350_BO1,204,203,200_After finding out that COM 267L, Introduction to Debate, was one of our LAS Protocol classes, I was looking forward to it. I hadn’t had any prior debate experience, and I was excited to both gain debate experience and further develop my argumentation skills.

Introduction to Debate really helped me understand how arguments are formed, their purpose in everyday life, and how to spot faulty arguments. While debating against my fellow LAS classmates definitely put me outside my comfort zone, I actually found the experience to be quite enjoyable.

Although Introduction to Debate has come to a close, I know that the information I’ve learned will stick with me. COM 267L continues to remind me to critically think about arguments made in my everyday life.
